Tom Segev's detailed research is amazing and we consider it a must-read. However, it was shocking to read how Mr. Segev "found excuses" for Zionist decision makers with regards to the Haavara agreement, being the 1st to break boycotting Nazis (9 years ahead of Mufti Haj Amin & Vichy), and above all why Zionist leaders did very little to help persecuted Europeans Jews during WWII! Mr. Segev kept repeating that Zionists were powerless/helpless; he minimized the effect of Haavara on building the "Jewish state" 15 years ahead of its time, although he admitted that the Jewish Agency was on the verge of bankruptcy! To put it bluntly: without Haavara, there would've been no "Jewish state".

All facts pointed out in this book show:

• Zionists had zero incentives to save Jews, and when the incentives were provided (money & immigrants), Zionists moved heaven & earth as they did when they signed Haavara with Hitler in August 1933!
• How Zionists were fixated on building the state 15 years ahead of its time, and everything else was way secondary (Mr. Segev emphasized this point over & over). Actually, on pages 102-104, he proved how Zionists used to talk about the Holocaust in the 1930s as if it had already happened, and all they could do was exploit it! Why bother trying to stop it?
• Zionists were focused on Palestine as the ONLY solution to the "Jewish problem" in Europe, and Mr. Segev didn't even entertain the ramifications of this fixation!
• This madness continued to be Zionists' policy not only after the Nuremberg Race Laws & Kristallnacht but also during WWII; Zionists were against finding any haven for Europe's Jews except for Palestine!

The questions are:

• Is it possible that Zionists exploited & weaponized Jewish suffering to force Great Britain to open Palestine for Jewish immigration?
• How closing all avenues in front of Jewish refugees except to Palestine didn't make the "final solution" inevitable!
• How could Zionists become distribution agents for Nazi products all over the Middle East & North Africa but not open up safe havens for Jews? (The Transfer Agreement, p. 373-4)

NYTimes, as late as 1943 Zionist leaders were lobbying US Congress to block Jewish refugees' safe heavens unless GB opens immigration into Palestine

It should be noted that the "final solution" wasn't in the pictures until late 1941, and Hitler contemplated "dumping" Jews in Madagascar as a last-ditch scheme as late as August of 1940! Yes, Hitler was a racist & anti-Semite but exterminating Jews wasn't his 1st or even the 2nd choice. Therefore, asking the prior questions is very legitimate.

That said, it should be emphasized that American Jews attempted to find answers to these questions and set up an investigative committee to do just that. However, the investigation was nixed halfway through and de-funded in early 1983. We urge the reader to contemplate reading this NY Times article before judging our review. Our questions were asked by American Jews since WWII ended; however, they are taboo to discuss.
